Anniversaries, Celebrations and Experiences worth Sharing

It was the 3rd anniversary of my oesophagectomy last Saturday (June 20th 2009). Needless to say I'm really happy that I remain cancer free. Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea if all members put a up a note on their anniversary so that newly diagnosed members can see how many of us are doing so well. Hope you agree

Congratulations! It does seem a long time ago at times, doesn't it! But achieving a good quality of life again after such a bleak period is very precious.
It is my grandson's 9th birthday today. My trouble started with a sickness bug (not cancer-related at all - vomiting caused my oesophagus to split) when he was only a few months old, and the intervening years have been more valuable than one can ever put into words!

My op was now 6 years ago. I remember when I reached 5 years - euphoria all round - as I'm told the likelihood of recurrence is much less after 2years and even smaller after 5years. Won't bore you with the stats.

Can't believe at the OPA meetings how many people have had their op over 5 years ago. The doctors must be doing something right

I was diagnosed in December 1999 and had my surgery in March 2000.
So I can happily say that my 10th Anniversary is almost here.
My quality of life is good (with a bit of sensible management of food, sleeping etc.) and I can now look on the experience as a distant milestone in my life.

The OPA National Chairman, David Kirby, had an oesophagectomy 25 years ago, and the Association is 25 years ago this year!
